Graduate Student Openings

Ph.D. Positions in Optics and Photonics

Ph.D. positions are available for highly self-motivated students having intellectual curiosity for learning optical sciences and who are ready to undertake creative research in the Photonics and Quantum Technology Laboratory led by Dr. Sahin K. Ozdemir (see publication list and research interests) in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics in the following photonics-related research fields:

  • Parity-time symmetry and exceptional points in optics and optomechanics
  • Micro- and nano-resonators for lasing, sensing and nonlinear photonic devices
  • Quantum photonics and materials

Excellent candidates with backgrounds in other areas including, but not limited to, plasmonics, silicon photonics, sensing, and optical spectroscopy, are also encouraged to apply. We aim to maintain a diverse research lab and strongly encourage applications from female candidates and students from underrepresented groups.

The specific tasks of the position will involve micro/nano-fabrication, optical measurements and characterization, numerical simulations, and computational methods. The successful candidates will have access to the nanofabrication and materials characterization labs at the Materials Research Institute and to the facilities at the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences.

Interested applicants may send an email to Dr. Sahin K. Ozdemir at sko9@psu.edu with the subject line: Ph.D. position 2018.
